King (sic) of Your Castle
Pst! You! Yes You! Can I ask you a personal question? Who runs your world?
If you're like me, and most of the other people you see around you daily, the answer to the question is anyone but you. We like to think that we are in control of our reality. We like to tell ourselves that we run our own world and that we do not give a (insert expletive here) what anyone thinks, but for the most part this is untrue. Yes, we have developed ways in which we can block off negativity in our lives, but how many of us are truly in control?
How many times can you actually say that you were in complete control of your thoughts and actions? Wouldn't you agree that most of our actions and thoughts are influenced by external sources? Of course you would. The truth is, for the most part, for the vast majority of us, our thoughts and actions are dictated by externalities, whether these be friends, our personal insatiable need for personal validation, family and/or co-workers. Someone may have directly or indirectly influenced your thoughts or actions today. Think about it. How do you feel at the present moment? OK now, ask yourself is what you're currently feeling the result of reading this blog post, of something that happened earlier today, or did you consciously choose the emotion you are feeling right now, free from influence?
If you feel how you feel right now because you made a conscious choice to feel this way, congratulations, you are the King or Queen of your castle. If however, your feelings are the result of someone or something that exists externally, you are not in control. You must understand that because you are no longer in control, you no longer rule your reality. You need to stop letting external factors dictate your feelings, thoughts and actions. If something does bother you in some way, you need to decide whether it really does bother you and hold on it and let some external factor rule your world, or decide that it does not really matter and let it go. I hope it is the latter. I have come up with a simple formula for one to experience happiness.
HAPPINESS= YOU- EXTERNALITIES
The less externalities affect you, the happier you will become.
